One Month Old

Well, my goal was/is to take a picture of Sally at each month mark. Yesterday (her month mark) it didn't happen, and today it barely did. I just plopped her down on the bed. No matching white outfit and background like I'd planned... thankfully our sheets are white and don't take away from her. I'm excited to see how much she changes from month to month. I can't believe a whole month has already gone by since Sally was born! I'm not even sure what I did this past month, but Sally's alive and well so that's all that matters. Also, I never understood why parents were so sad to see their baby growing. But now I see pictures of Sally from those first few days home, and I already feel like I've lost a precious time that I'll never get back. On the flip side, I love seeing her grow and change. Hard to explain, but there it is.

Some stuff about Sally right now:

  • She's started making some eye contact with us, and in the past few days we've gotten a few smiles out of her (!!!).
  • For the most part, Sally's sleeping in 4-hour stretches at night, but a few nights when she's been particularly fussy and not sleepy during the day, she has slept 6 or 7 hours. It's only happened three times, but Johnny and I feel invincible the next day.
  • Sally does not like bath time. I think the water scares her, and she gets really cold at the end. I don't look forward to giving her baths, so hopefully she starts liking it more.
  • Sally managed to shoot poop like two feet while I was changing her a couple days ago. I had to scrub the carpet for a good 20 minutes to get it out. And like an hour earlier her diaper had leaked poop all over our sheets. That was an interesting day, but it forced me to get our laundry done.
  • She's wearing some three-month-old clothes already because of how long she is!
  • Sally's got the business in the front/party in the back hairdo going on right now. Only the back half of her hair seems to grow!
  • She's just started making real tears when she cries, which totally kills me.
  • Sally loves sleeping on our chests. She would do it all day if we'd let her... it's so hard resisting that warm little ball of cuteness.

Funny story:

After I feed Sally in the night, I wake Johnny up to swaddle her. Sometimes it takes some pretty solid nudging to get him to wake up. Like me, he's exhausted. A couple nights ago I nudged Johnny awake at about 5:30 a.m., and he sat up, looking totally awake. This is how our conversation went:

"Will you swaddle Sally?"
"Yeah. What topic is it?"
"What do you mean?"
"What topic is it?" (sounding slightly annoyed)
"Johnny, there is no topic." (stifling hard laughter)
"Yes there is. You're laughing, but I know what I'm talking about."
"Okay... a topic for what?"
"For the parents. Otherwise it's just two minutes of crying."
"Okay..." (still stifling my laughter)

It was so weird because of how awake and with it Johnny seemed. These are the kinds of things that happen when you are sleep deprived. He was still able to do a good swaddle, though, and then he went straight back to sleep. Needless to say, we laughed really hard about it once we were both actually awake a few hours later.

A couple more pics from today of little miss Sally:

Sally is so sweet and adorable! I particularly liked your poop story. It is one of those "welcome to parenthood" moments we all experience. :)

it is so good that you're documenting as much as you are right now. being able to look back on your emotions during this time is so valuable. way to go, momma.
